Sony Headphones Review - The Best Noise Cancelling Headphones The fifth generation model of Sony's noise cancelling headphones looks a bit different than the previous version but they're just as great. Sony WH-1000XM5 Sony's headphones are regularly among the top of the line in the industry in the field of noise cancellation. The fifth generation of WH1000XM5s is not an exception. They provide one of the most impressive noise cancelling experiences we've ever experienced. The moment you put them on and enabling noise cancellation is like stepping into a symphony of silence: engine sounds, the whir of HVAC systems, the rumbling metal, and even conversations with neighbors are all muted to an incredible degree. The XM5s are also impressive on the audio front with a wide soundstage that can give all elements of a track room to breathe and shine. For instance, on Billie Eilish's Bad Guy, the drums pound with a satisfying weight and drive as soaring vocals harmonise across the mix. The XM5s stand out for their intelligent interaction with your smart device. They can recognise when they're being removed from your head and pause music, they'll notice that you're driving on a noisy road and automatically reduce the noise cancelling levels, and they can pair with two devices simultaneously to switch between them, depending on what you need urgently. The WH-1000XM5s also have a low environmental impact. The WH-1000XM5s are made of recycled plastics and acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. Their headband is made of high-quality fabric. They also come with a collapsible carrying case that folds to form a compact pouch, plus a 3.5mm-to-3.5mm accessory cable to listen in a passive mode. The ear cups are also washable and removable for easy cleaning. The XM5s are powered by a rechargeable battery that provides up to 20 hours of playtime on full charge, and they're equipped with an adaptive speed charging system that charges at twice the speed of traditional USB headphones. 2. Bose QuietComfort 35 The Bose QuietComfort 35/QC35 II Wireless 2018 are more adaptable than the Audio-Technica ATH-DSR9BT Wireless headphones because of their incredibly comfortable fit, well-balanced audio profile and ANC feature that blocks a lot of background noise. The Bose headphones come with a battery that lasts for 20 hours, they are more convenient to charge, and can be used with a smartphone even when the battery is empty. This makes them a great choice to those looking for headphones that can be used as commuter or travel headphones. These premium Bose headphones have a dedicated button that turns on Google Assistant, which will play music as well as answer trivia questions and read your smartphone notifications. They have outstanding noise cancellation capabilities, and even though they're getting long by 2020 standards (and have successors to their sibling line, the QC35), you can still find fantastic deals on the headphones. Like other Bose ANC headphones, the QC35s do an excellent job of cancelling out ambient noise and their noise reduction technology has improved over the years. They're not the top ANC headphone available particularly when compared to more recent competitors. Audiophiles should look elsewhere for better sound. The QC35s can also be used to connect to two devices at the same time and audio share with a person. This is great if you'd like to listen to music while talking to another person. These headphones are popular with frequent flyers and feature that classic Bose design that people adore. Sony WH-1000XM4 The WH-1000XM4s made by Sony do not change much in terms of comfort or aesthetics however, their noise cancellation technology is a completely new device. Sony has replaced the old system-on chip (SoC) for a new one that it claims allows it to more precisely listen to and react to ambient sounds in real-time, and reduce high- and mid-frequency sounds by using its Dual Noise Sensor technology. Two feedforward microphones inside each earcup suck up ambient sound. This is then processed by the QN1 noise canceling processor to cut it down as quickly as is possible without affecting the quality of your music. The result is an audio quality that is comparable to the top headphones in this price range. There's a sensitivity dial that allows you to alter the noise cancellation to meet your needs. If you're in a public space for instance you may want some ambient sound to filter through in the background, while at home you'll prefer a more closed-off listening experience. This feature uses geo-location to determine the appropriate setting based on the location you're at. The WH-1000XM4s are able to be used for hands-free calls. They come with an impressive 30 hours of battery life along with fast charging capabilities. The WH-1000XM4s also feature an extremely robust Bluetooth connection that supports multipoint and NFC support. In my testing an instant remaster of Paul McCartney's Flaming Pie was clear and vibrant and even rough mixes and recordings from home sound clear and full. Sony WH-CH720N If you're looking for headphones that offer excellent active noise cancellation at a budget-friendly price the Sony WHCH720N are an excellent option. They're a step up from their predecessor that was the 710N Wireless, with better ANC performance and a better audio quality. They also have smaller dimensions and up to 35 hours of battery life. However, if you're expecting top-of-the-line features such as LDAC Bluetooth support and Smart Listening with voice assistant integration, these headphones aren't suitable for you. They don't come with a carrying case, auto-pause feature, or foldable earcups, so they may be difficult to travel with. The build quality of the WH-CH720N is decent but not as good as the 1000XM5. The earcups and headband are made of plastic, which is lightweight and comfortable to wear for long periods but will not stand up to the rigors of use or even a few tumbles on hard surfaces. The design is somewhat bulky, and the earcups can creak when you move your head. The controls are easy to use, with tactile buttons that give good clicky feedback. One press of the power button toggles ANC on and off, whereas pressing and holding the button prompts you to turn on Sony's Adaptive Audio Control functionality. This feature allows you to select the preset audio profile according to the type of headphones you're using the headphones (e.g., Staying at Work or Running) or your current location (with your phone granted permission to determine this). The WH-CH720N is one the most affordable pairs of wireless noise cancelling headphones on the market. It offers excellent ANC for the price, a lightweight design and up to 35-hour battery life. These headphones are worth considering for if you frequently commute. 5. Earfun Air Pro The Air Pro is no different. Earfun headsets and earbuds are well-known for their excellent value. They are perfect for music and calls, and their ANC technology blocks out a large amount of noise, without making your ears feel uncomfortable. These headphones also have numerous features that are available in headphones that cost more than twice as more. The earbuds are emphasized in the bass range, which can create a rumble on many tracks. The lead vocals and instruments remain bright and clear. This makes them perfect for a wide range of content. However, they may sound a bit stuttery to some. The frequency response is extremely consistent, which means they sound the same regardless of what you listen to. We played Missy Elliott's Get Ur Freak On and the earbuds took to the song's bassy intro with zeal and energy. Stormzy's Vossi Bop was a similarly agile listen with the treble shining through the various layered vocals and percussion. Voice quality is excellent even in noisy surroundings. The earbuds feature the most recent Qualcomm chip to ensure the clarity of calls, with background noises and clicks kept at bay, even when speaking near the London Underground at rush hour. The Bluetooth connectivity of the earbuds is also excellent, with a small number of issues in our testing. They connect quickly and with minimal latency to iOS and Android devices. They are IPX5 waterproof, which means you can use them in rain or for workouts. However, they should not be submerged in water. They also come with a movable case that holds two and a half batteries which is ideal for travel.
